Stainless Steel Spiral Coil Tube (Coiltube) — Reactor-Grade Micro-Mixing Application

Product Code: 896 | Category: Spiral Coil Tube / Coiltube | Manufacturer: Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd.

1. Product Overview

The Stainless Steel Spiral Coil Tube (Coiltube) is a precision-engineered tubular product formed into a continuous helical or spiral configuration, designed specifically for use in chemical reactors, heat exchangers, and micro-mixing systems. Unlike conventional straight seamless tubes, the spiral geometry of the coiltube fundamentally alters fluid dynamics within the conduit, generating secondary Dean vortices that enhance turbulent mixing, increase heat transfer coefficients, and promote uniform residence time distribution (RTD) for viscous and non-Newtonian fluids.

Research documented in the study "Micro-Mixing Performance of Viscous Fluids in Spiral Coil Reactors" has demonstrated that spiral coil reactors achieve superior micromixing indices compared to conventional tubular reactors, particularly at high viscosity regimes where Newtonian assumptions break down. The coiltube product from Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials Co., Ltd. is manufactured to meet the stringent geometric tolerances and surface finish requirements necessary for achieving optimal hydrodynamic performance in such applications.

4. Manufacturing Process

4.1 Process Flow

  1. Raw Material Selection & Receiving Inspection: Certified hot-rolled or cold-rolled stainless steel bar stock or seamless pipe is procured with full mill test certificates (MTC) conforming to EN 10204 3.1/3.2. Incoming chemical composition is verified via Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) and Positive Material Identification (PMI).
  2. Pipe Drawing / Cold Reduction: Seamless pipe is cold-drawn through precision tungsten carbide tooling to achieve exact OD and wall thickness specifications with tight tolerances. Multiple drawing passes are performed as required.
  3. Intermediate Annealing: Periodic solution annealing (1050–1150°C followed by controlled water quench) is performed between cold-work passes to relieve residual stresses and restore ductility, preventing work-hardening related cracking.
  4. Precision Coiling / Helical Forming: The straight tube is fed into a CNC-controlled helical coiling machine equipped with servo-driven axis motors. The coiling parameters (pitch, coil diameter, number of turns, feed rate) are programmed to ensure geometric accuracy within ±1.0 mm pitch deviation. A constant bending force is applied to avoid ovalization or wall thinning at bend locations.
  5. Stress Relief Annealing (Post-Coiling): After coiling, the assembly undergoes a controlled stress relief heat treatment at 450–550°C to eliminate residual stresses introduced during helical forming, ensuring dimensional stability during service.
  6. Surface Treatment: The coiltube undergoes acid pickling (HNO₃/HF blend) followed by passivation to remove scale, contaminants, and to form a protective chromium oxide layer. Electropolishing is available for surface finishes requiring Ra ≤ 0.4 μm.
  7. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Full-length eddy current testing per ASTM A999 is performed to detect surface and near-surface defects. Ultrasonic testing is applied for wall thickness verification. Hydrostatic pressure testing is conducted at 1.5× maximum operating pressure per ASTM A270.
  8. Dimensional Inspection: Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) or laser scanning is used to verify helix geometry, pitch uniformity, and overall dimensional compliance with engineering drawings.
  9. Packaging & Dispatch: Coiltubes are packaged on custom wooden cradles or steel racks with protective end caps, desiccant, and moisture barrier wrap to prevent damage during transit.

4.2 Critical Process Controls for Micro-Mixing Applications

For reactor-grade micro-mixing applications, the geometric fidelity of the coiltube is paramount. The Dean number (De = Re × √(d/D)), where Re is the Reynolds number, d is the tube inner diameter, and D is the coil mean diameter, directly governs the intensity of secondary flow. Variations in pitch or coil diameter of even ±2% can alter the Dean number by up to 10%, significantly impacting micromixing efficiency. Wenzhou Jixing Metal Materials maintains CNC coiling tolerances within ±1.0 mm to ensure consistent hydrodynamic performance across production lots.
